You May Not Kiss The Bride

Writer: aislingproductionsaislingproductions

As an Irish Wedding Videographer we often seen the absence of the traditional “You may now kiss the bride” moment often catches couples by surprise. While many assume this iconic phrase is a universal part of wedding ceremonies, it’s not actually a standard practice in Irish Catholic weddings.

Historically, Irish priests have not included the first kiss announcement in the wedding ceremony. This omission stems from the Catholic Church’s focus on the sacramental aspects of marriage rather than secular traditions. The ceremony emphasizes the couple’s commitment before God and the community, with less emphasis on public displays of

affection.

Many couples, influenced by Hollywood portrayals of weddings, expect this moment without realizing it’s not part of the traditional Irish Catholic ceremony. It’s not uncommon for brides and grooms to be caught off-guard when the priest concludes the ceremony without prompting the kiss.

This cultural difference has led to some amusing situations. I often see the newly wed couple awkwardly waiting for the kiss announcement which never comes.

To avoid disappointment, couples planning an Irish Catholic wedding should discuss this aspect with their priest beforehand. Most Irish priests may include the kiss if requested, while a few may suggest the couple share their first kiss as newlyweds until after the ceremony. So if you are hoping for that first kiss moment during the ceremony make sure to discuss before hand with your priest.
